McHenry woman accused of stealing more than $3,000 from PTO account

A McHenry woman was arrested Thursday, January 10 on charges of embezzlement and forgery, according to the Stone County Sheriff's Department. The charges stem from an incident where the suspect allegedly tried using a check from Stone Middle School's PTO account at a grocery store in Perkinston.

According to Stone County Sheriff Mike Farmer, at the time of the incident, 39-year-old Janie Doris Roberson was the Stone Middle School PTO president. That check she wrote bounced alerting school officials, Farmer said.

Farmer said school officials contacted authorities.

"She has been cooperating with us and admitted to forging checks from the PTO account," Farmer explained.

Over the course of just a few months, Farmer said, Roberson allegedly took a totally of $3,500.

She was booked at the Stone County Regional Correctional Facility and released on a $10,000 bond.

Stone County School District Superintendent Gwen Miller said Roberson is no longer on the PTO and no longer the PTO president at Stone Middle School.

"Stone Middle School PTO has disbanded at this point, in light of the circumstances. It's very unfortunate. We are trying to benefit students. After the incident, we immediately issued notifications to other Stone School District PTO's and organizations telling them to make sure they have checks and balances in place and to make sure they are properly following procedures," Miller said.
