Wiggins decides Lundi Gras parade a good fit

WIGGINS, MS (WLOX)- Lundi Gras night, they were celebrating in the streets in the city of Wiggins. Close to 30 groups headed out for the celebration. Some traveled by float, some by truck and others even by horse.

"It goes for about ten blocks, so it's not very far. The bands don't have a hard time walking it, so it's not very long. But it's good, hometown, family fun," said Tina Gillespie with the Stone County Economic Development Partnership.

But regardless of the parade's size, the fun was still there. Exhilarating screams and smiles were a common sight during the city's ever growing Mardi Gras celebration. Last year, the parade was rescheduled due to weather. But moving from its usual Saturday night to the Monday night before Mardi Gras turned out to be a blessing.

"We had such a great tremendous turn out that we decided from now on we'll just keep it on Monday nights," Gillespie said. "There's no other parades around on the coast or in our area. We've almost doubled or tripled in our size here. So from now on, it will always been on Monday night before Mardi Gras."

Revelers like Claudia Fairley, a former Stone County teacher of 25 years, don't seem to mind the change.

"I just love Mardi Gras," Fairley said. "I think it's a great time of the year, so I had to come out to enjoy myself. I just hope everybody is having as much fun as I'm having."

The Wiggins Mardi Gras Parade is sponsored by the Stone County Chamber of Commerce.
